Description
This paper investigates the possibilities of an aesthetic approach to analyzing horror film. Given, that the genre is subject to numerous methodologically differing theories the paper understands its own approach towards the matter as eclectic. In order to sketch an aesthetic methodology for interpreting horror film, the paper introduces Deleuze's theory on the affection image. Subsequently, common readings on the horror subject are outlined via given examples of theorists such as Barbara Creed or Linda Williams. Those serve to exemplarily describe the discourse upon the genre. The paper finds that film theory is primarily obsessed with semiological or psychoanalytical readings. Furthermore, the paper argues, that these methods alone do not constitute a holistic analysis of the horror phenomenon. Hereupon, in reviewing Anna Powell's take on the affection image the discussed topics are aligned with the Deleuzian aesthetics. Powell sets out to test the applicability of the affection image within the readings of horror texts. She successfully applies the aesthetic reading to popular films and thus draws the conclusion, that an aesthetic approach towards the genre complements the semiological or psychoanalytical readings. Altogether, the paper does not intend to deliver a new method of film theory. It argues, that the dynamics of horror viewing do not allow constructing analysis merely along socio-cultural or psychoanalytical symbolism. Therefore, especially when it comes to thematizing the spectator, aesthetic analysis of the genre, which is per definition somatic and thus immediately linked to bodily reactions of the audience, cannot be ignored.
